Movie review of the Midnight’s children
Midnight’s Children novel written by Salman Rushdie and the movie is directed by Deepa Mehta. In this movie, we can see long narrative technique, story of three generations and political controversy and how situation changes within a time. Main characters are Saleem Sinai and Shiva. They are born in Bombay hospital and nurse exchange these babies. Within a few moments, their life changes. Rich boy becomes poor and poor, rich. Here we can see paradox and Salman Rushdie gives the message that situations can change anytime. If we try to look from Post Colonial angle, Saleem is treated badly by his teacher in the school, treated as a servant in his aunt’s house. We can see one psychological aspect too when Saleem calls his friends, they come and are only visible to him and not his sister. Idea of East and West is also seen that how a poor boy Shiva becomes a Army officer and treated Saleem as inferior. Here we can see juxtaposition that how status of a person changes through time. Saleem has to follow the rules strictly that are given by Shiva. Character of Parvati presents magic realism. Through her magic skills, she changes the situation and saves Saleem’s life.

It is the representation of the Theater of Absurd, the meaninglessness of time, place and identity. According to Michael Billington, The Birthday Party is a deeply political play about the individual’s imperative need for resistance.
