Old man and the sea and its theme
It is a story of Santiago, an old man who goes for fighting. He is a fisherman. This novella is narrated by an anonymous narrator.

Old man and the sea

It is a story of Santiago, an old man who goes for fishing. He is a fisherman. This novella is focusing on his journey in which he struggles and suffers a lot but he does not lose his hope. He fights for himself and for his pride. Santiago goes to sea but he returns empty-handed. His fellow and friend, Manolin is forced by his family to leave Santiago for another boat. But he does not so. Santiago is unsuccessful for eighty four days. But on eighty fifth days, he sets journey across ‘Marlin’ a big fish. “The old man and  Marlin fight to win. The old man gets injured. But he continues his struggle. They fight for three days, on third day; Santiago kills Marlin with his harpoon. He goes with dead fish. During returning to Sea shore the shark attacks the old man. He gives a fight to a giant shark.
The shark leaves the Marlin after making it just a skeleton. Then Santiago comes home. And he begins his morning with Menolin, and in the last scene, the old man lives his dream wherein the lions are on the beaches of Africa. It is a simple story of the novella but we come across many things during the struggle of the old man.

Theme of the novella

Heroism

It is the victory of the old man. He has to win to save his pride. First he fights to his fate as he is un succeeded for eighty four days. Then he goes for another fishing to fight with Marlin a big fish ,is also the matter of pride.
What may be the characteristics’ of hero. The hero goes for adventures  journey. He struggles and the the success is not temporary. But one thing makes him hero is the
Hero goes on……
Hemingway not only depicted the outer journey of hero but also the inner journey.

MANHOOD
The writer gives here the ideal picture of manhood. What may be the characteristics or behavior of man which proves him man.. They behave with honor and dignity. They suffer during duty and they accept their duty without any complaint.
It is not only focusing on the ideal or main deeds of hero but it is the novella which makes us learn to be good then better and better.

STRUGGLE FOR PRIDE

Santiago is an old man; he can lose his fight as he is old man. But he fights for his pride. Here all the characters and the old man feel pride to fight. The pride is the main force. Santiago is forced by his pride and the journey takes place. While he loves the Marlin and called him brother Santiago admits to kill it for pride.

THE HONOR IN STRUGGLE, DEFEAT AND DEATH

Santiago is struggling for the victory. He spends eighty four days without catching a fish. But he himself is not defeated by his fate. He fights to fate and nature for his pride. It is honour to defeat the fate for own self. It is not the battle against the nature. But it is the battle to prove man’s place within nature.
Old man and Santiago, they are the strongest characters and they show their pride, honour and bravery in fighting. If the  death comes. It would have an honor for them. They can escape as dining to death but they are the players. They are the heroes. The  quote which is very well said in the novella.
“MAN IS DESTROYED BUT NOT DEFEATED”

We are here on earth for making ourselves strong and better by the days go on. We are destroyed by others. But our heart is strong by determination. So it is impossible to defeat us. As Santiago proves himself here.
We also find poetic trace while Santiago says,
“Because I love you, I have to kill you.”
It is the beauty of death that comes before the destruction of Marlin.

PRIDE AS THE SOURCE OF GREATNESS AND DETERMINATION

The novella mainly focuses on strength, bravery and moral of heroes. It is like comparing the deeds of hero with ancient heroes.
Old man has a pride as a masterful fisherman. Pride motives man to greatness. The death of Marlin is because of the determination of Santiago. No matter how suffering is there, but their determination to prove their pride as hero is there at the moment of death also. Santiago bears days of hopelessness but in defeating fate he has a hope to win one day.

ARTIST’S STRUGGLE WITH HIS ART

Artist’s task is to create a work of art. It is also compared to give a birth to a child. It is like creating the piece of art in which you develop the inner sense and creation is the part of artist and its inner values concerning to art.
Here the old man is an artist who has mastery in fishing which represents an artist’s mastery. The old man goes too far. It is the process of imagination wherein there is no world but the world of imagination to create something.

CONCLUSION

The old man and the sea include most of the themes concerned to man, humankind and their inner journey.

Atheism and Morality   Atheism means not to believe in God, we can not say it is dishonesty. we can not find connection between honesty and religion. religious people have negative view towards atheist.  Good Thoughts are not bound to be with only religion. But we are sometimes applying false thoughts in the name of religion.values are more important than religion.

It is the representation of the Theater of Absurd, the meaninglessness of time, place and identity. According to Michael Billington, The Birthday Party is a deeply political play about the individual’s imperative need for resistance. Billington, he “doubts whether this was conscious on Pinter’s part “it is also private, obsessive work about time past; about some vanished world, either real or idealized into which all but one of the charact...
